The Tamiya 1/48 Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 Model Plane Kit accurately depicts a legendary war bird. The Bf 109 combined longevity and versatility. This G-6 was the most prolifically produced Bf 109, accounting for more than a third of the total. Introduced in early 1943, it could be fitted with underwing 20mm cannons in pods, or synchronized 13mm Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-10 . The Bf 109 played an important part in all operations during World War II. The prototype first flew on 28.05.1935. The single-seat fighter featured a 1,435 hp DB 605 engine which gave it a max. speed of 684 km/h at 7,400 m. Production totalled some 35.000 units.

We have seen many 1/72 scale Messerschmitt Bf 109 kits over the decades but few would stand up to scrutiny by today's standards. The Bf 109 F has been particularly neglected. Hasegawa released a pretty nice Bf 109 G-6 and a G-14 in 1994, and Tamiya delivered a lovely Bf 109 G-6 in 2019, but neither of these have been backdated to a Friedrich.

And so here we’ll be looking at a Bf 109E-4 aircraft from around the Battle of Britain period and I plan to build one of the options in this most recent boxing of the kit (March 2020) and shown above. The aircraft in question was flown by Oberleutnant Franz von Were, Gruppen-Adjutant I/JG 3, Samer, France, August 1940. The G-6 had a larger tail which is a unique shape made of metal, the wings contained small kidney bulges for the “normal” G-6, short tail wheel strut and no bumps on the oil cooler. The G-14 seemed to contain the longer tail strut, normal G-10 oil cooler bumps, and the tall tail made of metal (occasionally wood) but retained the small wheels.
Luftwaffe benchmark fighter, 'Gustav' 6 variant with up-gunned MG 131 cowl MGs and characteristic 'Beule' blisters over the gun breeches. The Bf 109G-6 is an example of how higher management's requirements can result in a worse product. As the war was progressing, the Bf 109F series was being more and more outclassed by the allied fighters it
